Freight traffic places immense demands on the superstructure. High axle loads in conjunction with poorly maintained and hardly sprung freight wagons lead to considerable dynamic loads that have to be borne primarily by the concrete sleepers. Axle loads of 30 tons and more therefore require a much more robust sleeper design than conventional lines.
